Beginning in the spring of 2005 Yoshiki Hase began photographing people living with HIV/AIDS at Housing Works East 9th Adult Day Health Care Program (ADHC). The East 9th ADHC offers extensive services including case management, medical, nursing, nutrition, acupuncture, substance use counseling, pastoral care, social work and art therapy. In addition to being afflicted with HIV/AIDS, clients live with issues in mental illness, substance abuse and homelessness. Furthermore, clients who attend ADHC’s program are social minorities because they have not had an opportunity to seek professional support in dealing with these issues.
Yoshiki Hase states that, “Although they have their challenges they are living their life to the fullest. Despite the constant struggles in their lives they continue to be thankful for having an opportunity to live. What they gave me was the positive energy of their great smiles and their courage to live. While developing friendships with them I realized what I am doing is simply a process of documenting their true selves.”
